The Guthrie Star
Thursday Morning, April 4, 1912

Pauls Valley, Okla. April 3 (spl.)-
A negro by the name of James Peffries shot and killed Lee Shireman, state enforcement officer, here last night. He was apprehended by officers but later fell victim to the infuriated mob and was shot twice and left for dead. Later when officers came back after his body he was gone and men immediately set out and searched the woods all morning today and finally discovered him in an old log hut, seven miles south of the town around noon. -- unreadable-- against him the sherriff's force spirited him out of town to Norman.
