W.D. "Hoppy" Chandler

Guthrie, Oklahoma Police Officer for Twenty Years: 7/1951 - 8/1971

Son of Arnold and Velma Chandler, Hoppy was born 11/28/1929 in Navina, Oklahoma. He had 1 brother, Willard, and 2 sisters, LaVerta and Illene. His family moved to Guthrie when Hoppy was just a few years old. He attended Guthrie Schools.

In July, 1951 he began his career as a Guthrie Police Officer. Then in August of 1951 he married the former Lela Ruth Biggs, daughter of Carl & Irene Biggs, who graduated from Coyle Schools. Lela was employed at the Logan County Clerk's Office, City Water Department and retired from the State of Oklahoma. Hoppy was a former longtime member of the Guthrie Round-Up Club.

They have one daughter, Shirley Ann Chandler Taylor, a 1970 Guthrie High School Graduate and Oklahoma State University Graduate, married Guthrian Jerry Taylor, who have lived in Yukon, Oklahoma since 1979. They have one son, Cory D. Taylor, of Edmond, Oklahoma. Shirley has one son by her prior marriage, Curtis Kent Smith, of North Oklahoma City.

They have one son, David W. Chandler, who graduated from Edmond High School in 1975, married to Siriphan Chandler, who live in South Oklahoma City. David has one son, Brad S. Chandler of Wylie, Texas.

Hoppy retired, with the rank of Lieutenant, in August, 1971, after 20 years with the Guthrie Police Department. They then moved to Edmond, Oklahoma where he was employed with Oklahoma Central University for 4 years. In March, 1975, Hoppy began his employment with the Federal Reserve Bank in Downtown, Oklahoma City, which he retired in 1995.

Playing Golf is Hoppy's favorite hobby, which he's won several Golf Tournaments. He and Lela enjoy traveling to Branson, MO, Laughlin, NV, and traveling to visit friends and family.
