Execution of Owens D. Hill, George Moss & Jack Crow
The execution in the Federal court yard last Friday was unattended with any special incident of importance. The culprits passed rather a restless night before their death, praying and singing much of the time. When day light dawned they became somewhat calmer and spent a good portion of the morning in shaking hands bidding friends good-by and in other ways preparing for their awful fate. Hill was apparently the happiest of the three. Moss and Crow were morne and gloomy and at times appeared to be unnerved at the thought of their impending fate. The spiritual advisers, Rev. R. C. Tyler and Rev. S. M. Fisher were with them constantly and apparently afforded them much consolation. Hill's sister visited him during the morning and the parting between them was very affecting. She accompanied him to the gallows, standing upon the platform until the fatal plunge was made and arranging his hands and closing his eyes after his body had been placed in its coffin.
At 12:30 p.m. Marshal Carroll entered the jail and read the death warrant at the conclusion of which begun the sad march to the gallows. The prisoners marched with steady step. Hill singing and praying alternately. Hill wore on his breast a large card on which were the letters M. S. B. made from the hair of his mother, brother and sister. This was buried with him.
After reaching the gallows short religious ceremonies were held by the attendant clergymen and the culprits then took their stand on the fatal drop. The nooses were then adjusted, the caps placed, the trap sprung, and the three wretched victims of the law's vengeance hang between heaven and earth. The necks of all three were broken and death was almost instantaneous. After hanging half an hour the bodies were lowered and that of Hill turned over to his sister, while the others were buried in the Potter's field. The execution was superintended by George Maledon, the veteran hangman.
Hanging was April 27, 1888
